hi, i 've been slack with posting here lately - been very busy with preparing for the mve to dublin (less than 2 months to go!) plus work & kids & life & all that jazz ....

anyhow, i'm about to buy myself an ipod; been thinking of it for a while, and am now about to do it so that i can transfer our whole cd collection to it & take that to dublin (without dragging well over 100 cds to the other side of the world). it's kinda exciting - once it's all set up & converted & transferred, i look forward to having all that music right there on that little thing ;-D

red sails in the sunset
midnight oil's 5th full album, released 23 years ago.
got a new cd copy the other day for $10; good deal!

during my high school years i had a taped cassette copy.
in my view it's a stronger album than i had recalled.
a bit eclectic in places, but i now view that as a good thing.
and of course 10-1 (their previous album, probably my favourite of theirs) had some eclectic moments too.

wikipedia put this album in the "new wave" genre ... i neither agree nor disagree.
in addition to rock, there's elements/moments of e.g. electronica, bluegrass & other similar 'folksy'? acoustic guitar work, longer atmospheric / sparse narrative pieces, surf guitar, a few mid-song tangential turns, plenty of political & social commentary of course vocalised by the man who is now the australian parliament's shadow environment sopkesperson, bizarre synth sound effects, and a few bits that probably are best described as just plain quirky.

a few more listens and this one could possibly draw level with 10-1 in my view;
and after all, this is the first full oils album i became acquainted with.

kids are often quite amazing!

a few weeks ago, while we were on holiday (camping on an island), it's after sunset & before dinner, and my son says he needs to do a poo. i walk him to the toilet and hang around outside the door while he does his thing (which invariably takes quite a while).

so he's sitting there on the toilet with pants off & legs spread wide, when he starts talking about god and what his friend told him about god. he asks me what i think about it all - about god's possible existence & relationship between god & 'the spirit'. i give a fairly agnostic-type or balanced answer, saying some beleive & some don't, etc. ... my son DEMANDS a committed answer one way or the oher! "yes or no dad?!?!"

2 weeks today since we left that wonderful island and sadly it seems like even longer ago ... let me tell u it is every bit as good as it looks, and then some!

so now we look forward & begin to plan & do the nuts & bolts & logsitics of moving the 4 of us to dublin, ireland in less than 3 months from now!!! that's right ... hard to believe, but true ... and exciting yet freaky (and sometimes a bit sad) all at the same time! but i am sure it will be a great adventure for a couple of years & highly worthwhile; that's why we're doin it!! the countdown is on, and the list has begun ... stay tuned for more!
